That’s very helpful- i have this year realised how little sun my garden gets I swear that there is a black cloud permanently over it! My cauliflower doesn’t look good and my lettuce has succumbed to slugs- but yes my potatoes onions and peas are thriving- I will follow your advice on cauliflower because i just love this vegetable and am thrilled when it “blooms “. I container garden at the front because I have a rubbish tiny garden and am following you because well I’m not very good at it and will take any advice I can get which i very much appreciate.
Ivan, that was so very helpful; thank you.🌱👌❤
Thank you Jen
Everything is looking so good, you are going to get a good harvest Ivan .l really like your wood planters but iv got no room on my patio so Im buying another set of plastic stackable containers. They are working really well for me on my patio, & they only cost me £13. They hold 18 plants & there's time for me to do last sowing of mixed lettuce, corn salad, spring onions, beetroot, baby carrots & radish. We have been harvesting lettucesIfrom my other one for weeks and it's already paid for its self. iI does dry out quickly though, so have to water every day in this weather, but it's easy as its right by our back door. Home grown salads save such a lot of money, and bonus that they are all organic.
Great Job Thank you Katie
Thank you Ivan for this wonderful advice. 🙏
Thank you Irene
Do you drill holes in the wash basins Ivan? I tried yesterday and the drill would not go through but spun around on the plastic 😂
I just used a wood bit in the drill it goes through easy Thank you Susie
Thanks for your guidance.
Thank you too
I agree, lettuce will be fine in shade or semi-shaded areas without turning bitter. Strawberries seem to do ok in shaded areas too. Less fruit but they're fully formed and sweet. Cilantro is definitely better in semi-shaded areas, it bolts fast if the plants get a day or two of full, hot sun. Flowers can be used to shade other plants that get sun or wind burned. Every garden is different, but the plants can show us where they thrive or don't.
Good stuff Thank you
@@ninemoonplanet Is 'cilantro' what we call coriander? If so, I used to grow it, and flat-leaved parsley, when I lived in the Middle East. Even high temperatures didn't bother it too much as long as it had shade, but you are absolutely right that full hot sun will bring an end to its cropping very quickly indeed.
Thanks Ivan, as always we can rely on you for sound advice. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you too Sheila
I find that broad beans are very successful in the fully-shaded area of my raised bed. It gets _no_ direct sun at all, but is nevertheless quite 'light'. Rhubarb is also very happy there. The rest of the raised bed is what I'd called semi, or lightly, shaded, and peas are flourishing, as are spuds.
Great stuff Thank you
Thanks Ivan, for this great update with some very relevant info'. I believe that we are going to get some rain and cooler temps up here in the north west in the morning but I don't know how you are going to be tomorrow. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Yes we have wind on the way back soon too Thank you Stevie
Thank you Ivan for the suggestions, like everyone I have a shady area that doesn’t get sun until late afternoon as the sun comes over and then sets at the front of the house. I will try these in bowls as you suggest, minimal compost and a good return as a harvest 👌💕
Thank you
Good sense as always Ivan. And a useful reminder for me to sow some more lettuce, for when my current abundance suddenly all runs to seed! Isn't successional sowing hard in our British climate though? I tried one early sowing (failed germination), tried a second (failed again), tried a third then a fourth some weeks later - lo & behold they've all caught up and come together! 😖😂
Great stuff Thank you Anthony
Your pots & planters look so well Ivan. I think my new spuds are getting ready to harvest now, my lates how often should I be watering Ivan, thanks for sharing your lovely plants ..
Just water if leaves start to droop Thank you
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Cheers Ivan ..
Our heat dome has arrived...102F today. Each day going hotter. Shade for us is the only way to get any garden to survive. I'm heading out to cover my herb garden.
Wow brill Thank you Connie
Do you use seawed fertilizer? If so, how often do you use it? Thanks
Hi yes i use it every 14 days Thank you
My garden is mostly north facing. So everything on the north end gets a few hours of sun over lunch time, East facing fence gets the early morning ànd West facing the late afternoon. Still learning where to put what for best positions. Got kohlrabi growing both east and west facing in two opposite beds atm. Peas are getting the best of both I hope. It's like playing chess with the sun and shade.
Yes thats a pain but we have to make the best of it
I used a bit of science for getting bioavailable calcium. Grind very clean dry eggshells fine, add 1 tsp to a fairly large bottle, then add 1 cup of vinegar. This will foam up considerably. The result is calcium acetate, bioavailable. I use plain Epsom salts and dissolve 1/8 tsp in 2 quarts of water, take one DROP of the calcium solution, mix, then I make it a fertilizer by adding compost extract. I have worm compost which is very good for everything. The composter is in my kitchen, no ugly smells, no need to keep it between the required temperature, and I can add my food scraps right into the bin.
Great stuff Thank you
Nice informations, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
No les da mucho sol
No but will be fine
That's a good timely reminder to peg out some strawberry runners - thanks Ivan. I expect you're on the right track with the discoloured tomato leaves... often hard to be sure of the exact cause of it, but well-nourished plants growing quickly can shrug off many problems, can't they? I've never tried the Calmag, but I know calcium deficiency is often not shortage of calcium as such but rather inability to take up calcium due to a shortage of magnesium: Epson Salts is the traditional cure (eg 1kg on offer at Holland & Barrett for only £3 now!)
Thank you Anthony
Ivan stick your moisture meter in one of the holes under the pot.
Yes still looking for it since the move Thank you
Ivan I bet your tomato plant is waterlogged.
Yes will have to check that
Thanks Ivan for more great info' on a lovely summer day, yay, I've finally built my small greenhouse after wanting to do it only to be interrupted by either ill health or bad weather. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thank you Stevie
I am loving your gardening again!! So inspiring and trying to catch up with you!👍
Thank you Glenys
Hi Ivan I haven’t seen any tomatoes on any of my vines I had so many plant them in stages I pull them up, so I decided to get six more and try again hoping that I would get some this time👍
Best of luck
Tomato plants are a minefield of problems. I find it difficult to know if you are under watering or over watering, i thought yours looked a bit dry, but peoples opinions differ loads on watering .Thanks for the CalMag tip, i have been using since your video. Might give peppers a go next year too. Cheers!!
Great stuff Thank you Robert
I have left my strawberry plants under a bench at the bottom of the garden for the last 3 winters and they produce every year. Live in East Midlands.
Brill Thank you
🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤩
Thank you
Where do you get your Calmag from Ivan? Is it at a store or online? Lovely Goldfinch singing in the background whilst you were propagating the strawberries. (Used the Merlin app).
Hi Bob got it from ebay around £6
Hi Iven , last year on one of your videos you showed how to grow off the main strawberry 🍓 plant as shown in this video, so thanks to that vidio I have more strawberry plants this year, anyway all the best.Tim.
Brill Thank you Tim
I give mine one part milk to ten parts water for calcium fix. It works like magic. Same on cucumbers and corgettes. 😃
Yes i did that last year and it helped Thank you Irene
Hi Ivan, everything looking amazing. Can I ask, where did you buy that white balcony pot . My daughter has a cat cage in her garden and they would be perfect for that. Thanks.
I think it was from the yorkshire trading company
Watch out for sunburn on the pepper plant ( it’s been indoors) 👍
Thank you Tom
Where will you overwinter these ? Also any plans for some more growing spaces for next year
Strawberry are hardy.
Can just be left outdoors Very hardy but i may put them in the propagator
Thank you
Ivan, everything like your garden I grow in containers. Each year I am dumping the old soil out, refreshing it with compost from my worms and bins. I don't get anywhere near as many slugs as I did before I changed the soil each spring. The slug eggs may be buried and die instead of chewing everything up. The weather has been cool, wet and rainy almost all spring, so I did expect a slug party, but nothing much to date.
I love going to the garden and getting a couple of carrots for salads or just a quick snack. Yours look perfect for that.
Yes its great Thank you Connie
I always drill holes about half an inch from the side if the pots don't have holes, then put in some pebbles etc, this leaves a little water in the bottom if the weather gets too dry,
Great stuff Thank you
You just planted those peas! Wow!
Thank you Connie
Thanks Ivan, for this great update and everything is looking well. Have a great week. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thanks 👍 you too Stevie
I wish Lidl had those poles in now. I bet they won't ever be in again.
I hope so could do with a couple more
I LOVE your channel... As a VERY new "gardener" you've taught me so soo much... Im making a lot of mistakes this year ( which im also learning from) but seriously, you are great to watch... Thank you
So nice of you Thank you
You are so good at growing veg Ivan.👌🥕 Wish I was.😥
Thank you Jen much appreciated
Everything is looking good Ivan.👌🌱
Thank you
Are u going to get a allotment?
No not allowed one unless living in a town Thank you Harry
All looking great Ivan. 👍😁
Thank you Irene
Cant wait to see the cauliflowers when they are ready
Fingers crossed
Looking good Ivan! That's a great point about new pots & compost = no slugs. When I've hardened off deep-root trays before planting out, I noticed that the trays always end up with the nasty little slimeballs hidden underneath! I wash my pots & trays doubly carefully since noticing the danger before reusing for any more seed or young plants. 😈
Good idea Thank you Anthony
Wa hoo just pulled my first early potatoes, each bucket just short of a kilo of tatties
Great stuff
Crystal apple and there delicious.
Oh yes Thank you James
Wow super duper ivan x
Thank you
